Project Manager & Animator
PROJECTS
CHARMLESS CREED
Directed by my peer Kennedy Nichols, Charmless Creed is an in progress short film made possible by Austin Peay State University's Summer Research Grant. I was brought onto the project as a character concept artist and storyboard artist.
CHARACTER CONCEPT ART
I designed the characters Pepper, Agave, Lait, and Old Lady for the project which were made into animation safe designs later in production.

STORYBOARDSI storyboarded the final sequence of this film. During this section, Agave, the main character, and her knight Tate are studying a crystal ball which displays past events like storybook paper cutouts and discovering the people they call their allies may not be their enemies.

“When a group of bloodthirsty aliens break out of their prison, a famous Space Fleet Commander hunts them down across the galaxy.”
Commander Fame & The Fugitive Aliens was produced in my Animation Production Studio Fall 2023 class alongside a team of seven other animation students at Austin Peay State University. Working together, we have created a two minute animated film in 15 weeks.

ORIGINAL PITCH
CONCEPTUALIZATIONThe first assignment of my Production Studio class was to create a 5 minute pitch for our film and present it to the class. My goals for my pitched film was to include high octane colors and action, an early 2000s sci-fi style, and transgender representation.
After the entire class pitched their films, Commander Fame was 1 of 3 films chosen to be produced.
PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
SHOTLISTS & GANTT CHARTMy most important duty as project manager was creating and maintaining our shotlist and gantt chart. I tracked our progress, set independent deadlines to appropriately pace our group, and delegated tasks.
We quickly learned that the first version of our shotlist was not friendly or informative at all. It was hard for any of my teammates to keep track of our pipeline. After our first Work In Progress meeting, I created our new shot list in order to facilitate my teams needs. I knew it would be helpful to see everything on one page and immediately know who they're passing off their files to, so I designed the sheet to reflect these needs.

ORGANIZATION

REMOTE COMMUNICATIONWe used Discord as our main mode of remote communication for our project. With the help of my team members we made a server with appropriate channels to assist us. When not in class and working on our duties, we would join the voice channel in order to have a focused work space with our teammates. We had three main categories of text chats:Command Hub - Where the most important information for production was posted, from announcements to instructionals and creative documents.Production - Where relevant information for the actual production of Commander Fame was put. This included channels for brainstorming, a place to post progress on animations, and an easy way to access our google drive.Fame Fan Fourms - Where we communicated generally as a group and bonded, posting memes and playing games with one another.I wanted to design the Discord in order to allow us to build a coworker-like relationship with one another, but also to become closer as friends and trust each other.
FILE ORGANIZATIONGoogle Drive was our main method of file sharing for the project as it was seamless to upload files and reliable to always remain backed up.
Induvially we managed files on our own terabyte harddrives and made sure to save multiple versions of each file. How we organized our files within the Drive changed drastically through production like with our Shotlist. We went from less specific folders to more general folders for ease of mass downloads and finding files.

MEETINGS
After each important group milestone, our team would join together physically during class to:Set goals and expectations for productionDiscuss issues during production and how to fix them going forwardCorrect character designs, prop designs, and storyboards as a groupIn the slideshow on the right, slides from one of my meeting presentations are displayed.
Art Direction
STYLE GUIDES
At the beginning of Pre-Productio, I gave my team a style guide with links to shows and different animation styles we would be lifting from for our film. I wanted the team to have a clear idea of our artistic goals.

From this guide, I assigned two of my team members specializing in Backgrounds and Props deliver guides for our film.

ANIMATION TESTS
Before we started animating, I also created animation tests in order to see if we should animate solely on 4s or a mix of 2s and 4s.We decided to animate on a mix of 2s and 4s to pay homage to the the anime style we were inspired by while also being able to play with western animation principles.

STYLE CHECKSDoing checks to make sure everything was On Style was a very important aspect of Commander Fame from the very beginning of Pre-Production. We had a very specific style we wanted to deliver on and it was important to all of us, not to only achieve this style, but to expand our artistic skillset. Many of my teammates joined Commander Fame because they wanted the challenge the style posed to help them become more prepared for the industry. The model sheet for Commander Fame, created by Sara Roach, was a joy to style correct and see how Sara brought their own influences to the table.

COLOR STORIESI created color stories in order for my backgrounds crew to color the scenes appropriately and for our compositor to understand the color scheme for each scene. It would have been impossible to create a consistent film without it.

“After Discovering his school is giving out a $10,000 grant for a summer art project, Woody and his friends make it his mission to get top surgery-- FOR ART of course!"

The DogwoodDeadname Art Collective in Clarksville, Tennessee is creating a 15 minute cartoon episode to be delivered in the Spring of 2024 with the help of 23 artists and animators. The cartoon follows our mascot, Woody, as he and his friends get him a $10,000 grant through comical errors.
We are currently in our production period.
TEAM MEETINGSLike with other projects I've worked on, team meetings are a cornerstone of touching base about production. With the creative director of the project, we swap presentation duties for every meeting. We meet both in person and online for meetings. This slideshow is a slice of one of my slideshows for pre-production

SHOTLISTAlongside the project's creative director, I devised a very simple shot list for our project. When a checkbox is marked on the sheet, the box turns green to indicate that step of production is done.
SCHEDULESimilarly to our shotlist, the creative director and I created a schedule of both our production and our meetings. We planned fewer meetings for during the school year and more for our crunch period during the winter break.

ABOUT

Hello! I am William (Will) Gore (He/Him). I am an Animation & Visual Effects major with a passion for project management and art direction. I specialize in keyframe and action animation. I love the science of timing and frames-- the true technicals of animation that make it work.I've led many projects and groups including my first thesis film, "Commander Fame & The Fugitive Aliens", and the Austin Peay Art & Design departments artist residency program, The Living Gallery. As a leader, I empower the artistic voices and agency of my teams-- allowing them to become personally invested in our project and shared space. Not only should teams care about deadlines, expectations, and all the nitty gritty of their job; they should care about each other.Contact me below for rates and availability!
